Microsoft shocked the world by releasing their first iPhone app, Tag Reader, in 2009. The launch of Microsofts new app allowed users to point your iPhone’s camera at a QR Code which then instantly returns information, without having to type long URLs.

QR Codes are encoded barcode images that resemble a square maze. These barcodes transfer a variety of data, for example:

  • Text
  • Hyperlink Directly to Websites
  • Telephone numbers
  • SMS/MMS message
  • Email Address
  • Contact entry to Events
  • Calendar entry
  • Coupons

The potential applications of QR codes for marketers was exciting.  The Microsoft Tag Reader could be integrated into all ongoing marketing campaigns.  Print ads with a QR Code can sync a smartphone to the brand’s web page — play a video, apply a coupon instantly and order on demand. The Tag Reader can drive social media engagement, sending fans to the brand’s Facebook Page for updates on product improvements, special events and promotions.
